Franklin White (1892-1975)

Artist Name Franklin White (1892-1975)
Title The Auction
Description This superb, large and vibrant Modern British figurative landscape oil painting is by noted Slade School artist Franklin White. Painted circa 1920 it was exhibited at the New England Art Club and has a label verso. It is a masterpiece of inter war Breugal Britishness. The setting is a village auction and the painting is packed with numerous people, the ladies in their colourful finery, watching the entertainment, some from their carts. Cattle are in the ring and more animals seem to be escaping from the barn. Children climb the hay stacks behind the scene and the landscape disappears into the distance viewed between big fir trees. It looks like organised chaos but everyone is having fun. The painting is very vibrant and full of energy and light. This is a magnificent twenties Breugal-esque figurative landscape and an excellent example of Franklin White's work.
Provenance New England Art Club Exhibited.
Medium Oil on Canvas
Size 48 x 40 inches
Frame Housed in its original ebonised gallery frame 53 inches by 45 inches and in good condition.
