Painting of the Week - Susan Isabel Dacre

Portrait of Girl with Tambourine
This superb British 19th century portrait oil painting is by much respected Victorian suffragette female artist Susan Isabel Dacre. The portrait was painted in 1875 in Rome whilst Dacre was pursuing her art studies in Rome and Paris with her life long friend and fellow artist Annie Swynnerton between 1874-1880. Dacre was an early member of the Feminist movement and a member of the Manchester arts community. She travelled with Lord Leighton including to Capri in 1872 and exhibited widely. The composition is a bust length portrait of a dark haired young woman in traditional dress, holding a tambourine and gazing away from the artist/viewer. Dacre has perfectly depicted the different textures of her soft lace bodice, shiny gold earrings and facial features. The details and brushwork are superb and colours still bright. This is a superb 19th century portrait by a much sought after Victorian female artist painted she whilst travelling with Annie Swynnerton in Rome.
