Painting of the Week - James Peter Quinn

Portrait of Violet Ann Gilbert
This stunning exhibited portrait oil painting is by noted artist James Peter Quinn. Painted in 1929 it was exhibited at the Paris Salon the same year. The composition is a three-quarter length seated portrait of Violent Ann Gilbert against a red patterned background. She is wearing a sleeveless black dress with a chiffon shawl. She holds a fan in her lap, often a symbol of wealth and status in a portrait. She is also wearing earrings, a pendant and broach that are all probably saphires. Violet is smiling and gazing away slightly to her left. The detail and brushwork are superb. This is a fabulour twenties portrait oil painting by a noted Australian listed artist and an excellent example of his work, housed in the original period frame.
Signed lower left.
