Edward William Wyon (1811-1885)

Artist Name Edward William Wyon (1811-1885)
Title Reclining Female Nude
Description This beautiful British mid 19th century oil on board painting is by Edward William Wyon. It was painted in 1843 when Wyon would have been in his early thirties. The composition is a full length reclining female nude, lying on her side  with her head on her hands. Although Wyon was primarily a sculptor he also painted portraits. He would have completed drawings and painting in his training and also probably produced paintings in preparation for sculptures. Interestingly, this painting has a smaller study of a woman in the bottom right hand corner but both images appear finished and in some detail rather than sketches, and are of course in oil. Wyon has perfectly captured the anatomical details, particularly the curves of her back, hip and buttocks and the posture would be perfect to develop into a sculpture. However, the detail in the skin tone and face are perhaps beyond what Wyon would need for a sculpture so perhaps he was painting this reclining nude purely as a painting. Either way it is a superb example of his work as an artist and of mid 19th century art, with good provenance.
