Robert Watson (Fl. 1845-1866)

Artist Name Robert Watson (Fl. 1845-1866)
Title Whitby Harbour and Abbey
Description This lovely Victorian oil painting is from the English School circa 1840 and was previously sold at Christie's London in 1986 as circle of Robert Watson. The painting depicts a busy harbour with fishermen attending to various boats. Above the harbour, on a snow clad hill with the sun just breaking through clouds, towers the iconic ruins of Whitby Abbey. Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom. The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1545. This is a very atmospheric painting and different take on a much loved Yorkshire landmark.
