Title Romantic Abbey Ruins, Haughmond
Description This stunning Victorian oil painting of romantic abbey ruins came out of Yeaton Peverey Hall, 'Shropshire's first self consciously artistic Victorian country house' and more details are below. The location is possibly Haughmond Abbey a ruined, medieval, Augustinian monastery a few miles from Shrewsbury, England. The site is now in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public during the summer. A really atmospheric painting. The painting dates to circa 1860.

Unsigned.

Provenance Yeaton Peverey Hall.

"Shropshire's First Self-Consciously Artistic Victorian Country House" The house was built in 1889-92 by Aston Webb for Sir Offley Wakeman, Bart, antiquary and local politician, and is Webb’s only full scale country house. The style is informal Elizabethan and only the very best materials were used; choice English oak for the half-timbering, green Westmorland slate for the roofs and red sandstone from the Triassic beds at Boreatton. For thirty years, until 1971, Yeaton Peverey Hall was used as a school with around 100 pupils.
