Portrait of a Gentleman in Traditional Scottish Dress |
| Description |
This superb British Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed to circle of Thomas Lawrence and is surely by a very experienced hand. Painted circa 1820 the composition is a half length profile portrait of a gentleman in a foreboding landscape dressed in traditional tartan dress. He rests one elbow on a wall and has his hand to his head, looking into the distance and smiling. His tartan is blue and green with red stripes running through it and he has a red scarf at his neck and feather in his hat. The detail in his facial features is superb as is the brushwork and vibrant colour. This is a superb Scottish Old Master portrait and clearly something special. |

| Biography |
Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) was a leading English portrait painter and the fourth president of the Royal Academy. Lawrence was a child prodigy. He was born in Bristol and began drawing in Devizes, where his father was an innkeeper at the Bear Hotel in the Market Square. At the age of ten, having moved to Bath, he was supporting his family with his pastel portraits. At eighteen he went to London and soon established his reputation as a portrait painter in oils, receiving his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790. He stayed at the top of his profession until his death, aged 60, in 1830. |
