Description This charming British Victorian oil painting is by exhibited female artist Jane Vivian. Painted circa 1885 the composition is the Grand Canal Venice with the Rialto Bridge in the background. In the foreground are colourful boats and figures, surrounded by the magnificent achitecture of Victorian Venice under a summer sky. Vivian specialised in paintings of Venice and this is a particularly fine example of her work, capturing the essence of the city and its people.

The Rialto Bridge is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. Connecting the sestieri of San Marco and San Polo, it has been rebuilt several times since its first construction as a pontoon bridge in the 12th century, and is now a significant tourist attraction in the city.

Frame Housed in an ornate gilt swept frame, 40 inches by 26 inches and in good condition.

Biography
Jane Vivian (active from 1869, exhibited 1881-88). Vivian was a London based artist who also later lived in Birmingham. She spent part of her career painting in and around Venice in the 1880's and is best known for her oil paintings of the city and its canals and architecture.
