Description This superb British Old Master marine oil painting is attributed to  Peter Monamy. Painted circa 1730 it depicts Morning Gun - A morning gun is a gun fired at the first note of reveille at military installations. Reveille is a signal that marks the start of the day. The morning gun is usually fired from the admiral's or senior officer's ship, and is answered by the muskets of the sentries in the other ships. The morning gun is also known as the dawn gun. In the foreground are two men on the shoreline. Out to sea is a large ship with sails up and banners flying. Smoke is coming from the firing of the gun. Another ship is near by and smaller vessels in the distance. Land can be seen either side in the distance and a dawn stormy sky above is clearing. A dramatic and colourful British Old Master marine oil painting with great detail and and brushwork.

Biography Peter Monamy (London, 1681-1749)  was an English marine painter who was born in London in 1681, the youngest son of a Guernseyman. Throughout his career he was heavily influenced by the works of Willem van de Velde, the Younger.
