Artist Name John Campbell Mitchell (1862-1922)
Title Galloway Landscape
Description An original early 20th century Scottish Impressionist landscape oil on canvas by Scottish listed artist John Campbell Mitchell RSA.  He is a well listed Scottish artist who exhibited in galleries and major Scottish and British art institutions. He was noted for his landscapes and seascapes in and around Galloway. This impressive impressionist oil painting "Galloway Landscape" was painted in 1901 and I believe it was his Royal Scottish Academy exhibition work of that year.  A lovely painting, housed in its original ornate gilt swept gallery frame. Fine fluid painterly technique. A delightful piece of Scottish art history.

Biography John Campbell Mitchell RSA (1862-1922). ARSA 1904, RSA 1919. Mitchell was born in Campbeltown and studied at the RSA Schools, settlingh in Edinburgh where he remained all his life.

Mitchell painted broad expanses of moorland and rolling countryside seen under changeable skies - some areas bathed in strong sunlight, others turning from blue to purple as the clouds cast their shadows. He also painted wide expanses of blue sea and sand. Mitchell represents the best of this kind of Scottish landscape painting - pure, clear colours, a fluent oil technique and great sense of movement. He rarely used watercolour, but was nevertheless competent in the medium. He died in Edinburgh in 1922.
