Portrait of St Jerome |
| Description |
This superb Italian religious Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed to follower of Guido Reni. Painted circa 1620, it is a head and shoulders portrait of Saint Jerome (about 342-420 AD). He was a theologian, writer and hermit, famous for producing the first Latin translation of the Bible, known as the Vulgate. He is looking heaven-wards with his hand to his chest. His long white beard cascades down and a vibrant red robe is around his shoulders. There is fantastic detail in his facial features and a superb luminosity to the painting. A fascinating Old Master painting by a very assured hand.
