Artist Name Unknown Artist
Title Nymph Playing Pipes Beneath a Tree
Description This bewitching Victorian pre-Raphaelite oil painting is attributed to an artist from the Swiss School. Painted circa 1880 the composition is a nude young woman or Nymph with blonde hair cascading down her back, her robe on the floor. She is playing a double recorder or pipes to a beautiful long tailed bird in a tree above her head. Beyond her in the rocks is the head of Pan. In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Pan is the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, rustic music and impromptus, and companion of the nymphs. There is superb detail in the vibrant flowers at her feet and her skin tone is superb. A thoroughly charming Pre-Raphaelite Victorian oil painting housed in a generous gilt frame.
