Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823)

Artist Name Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823)
Title Portrait of Mrs Anne Neale Tucker Lauzun
Description This lovely British Old Master portrait oil painting is painted in the manner of Sir Henry Raeburn. Painted circa 1800, the sitter is Anne Neale Tucker Lauzun. She was born in St George's in Bermuda in 1776. In 1792 Anne and her mother travelled to Scotland to visit relatives and Anne stayed on with 'Aunt Bet', part of the high society in Edinburgh. It was three years later in Edinburgh that Anne's portrait was painted by Raeburn when she was still only nineteen. In 1796 Anne met and married Henry William Lauzun at St Martin-in-the-Fields,  London, aged twenty three. Originally an engineer, Henry also had commercial interests and bought Schweppes and became a very wealthy and successful businessman. The Bermudian wife and engineer/businessman had seven daughters. Henry died aged 63 and Anne lived on for another thirty three years, dying in England in 1861 aged 85. The portrait of 'Nancy' by Raeburn was donated to the National Gallery in London in 1900 by one of Anne's then elderly daughters, Henrietta. This painting is a copy of the original painting by Raeburn and is a charming and skilful rendition. Anne is seated, wearing a white dress and pictured with a landscape beyond. The details of her facial features and the brushwork are quite Impressionistic. A lovely example of a British Old Master portrait.
