| Description | This lovely French Edwardian dog portrait oil painting is by noted animal artist Victor Marcou, renowned for his paintings of animals, especially dogs. Painted circa 1910 the dog, a Setter, is in the foreground on a hillside with dwellings and countryside beyond. The dog is intently sniffing the air but has also adopted a playful pose, bowing down. The brushwork, impasto and realist detail make this a superb example of French Edwardian animal art. Signed lower right. |

| Biography | Victor Marcou (1879 - 1934) Born in Rouen, Marcou was a noted French animal artist, renowned for his paintings of animals, especially dogs. He studied at Beaux Arts in 1892-1896 and was a student under Dufour and Marchand. He won a medal in 1913 at the Concours de Paris. He died in Paris in 1934. |
