Basile de Loose (1809-1885)

Artist Name Basile de Loose (1809-1885)
Title The Lace Making Lesson
Description This superb Belgian 19th century figurative interior oil painting is by noted Flemish artist Basile de Loose. Painted in 1858, it is a superb example of his speciality; relaxed domestic interior family scenes, beautifully lit and well executed. A young woman is being tutored, perhaps by her mother, in the Flemish art of lace making as a younger girl looks on. The colours of their clothing are gorgeous and there is tremendous detail in their features and the details of the room. One can clearly see the girl's lace bobbins and pins on her lace pillow as she works. A really charming painting and an excellent example of De Looses' work.

Bobbin lace, also known as pillow lace, is a method of making lace by weaving threads held on bobbins and pinning them on top of a pattern pinned to a pillow. To begin bobbin lace making you need a pillow, bobbins, straight pins, thread, and a pattern. These five tools come in a variety of shapes and styles.

Biography Basile De Loose or Deloose ( 1809-1885) was a Belgian painter who specialised in domestic scenes, interiors and portraits. He started his artistic education under the tutorship of his father Jan-Jozef De Loose and continued his studies afterwards at the Antwerp Academy under Philippe van Bree. He resided in Paris in 1835 and also spent time in Germany where he exhibited his work which was well received. He finally returned to live and work in Brussels. Brussels, the Belgian capital, was the centre of artistic activity in the nineteenth century and Basile de Loose rented a studio there from 1837. His pleasant domestic scenes, softly lit and technically well executed, place him in the tradition of bourgeois Flemish art.
