Description | This superb British 19th century landscape oil painting is by noted artist John Linnell. Painted circa 1840, the composition is an old windmill beside a river in a hilly landscape with anglers beside the water. Several other figures are walking around the mill. The most dramatic Linnell-esque clouds are rolling across the sky. The mill is beautifully detailed and illuminated in the sunshine and the brushwork generally is superb. This is a lovely British 19th century landscape and an excellent example of Linnell's work. Painting is unsigned. |

Biography | John Linnell (1792-1882) was an English landscape and portrait painter and engraver. Linnell was a naturalist and a rival to John Constable. He had a taste for Northern European art of the Renaissance, particularly Albrecht Dürer. He also associated with William Blake, to whom he introduced Samuel Palmer and others of the Ancients. |
