Description This superb British Old Master landscape oil painting is attributed to circle of Thomas Barker of Bath. Painted circa 1830 the composition is an expansive landscape of the view from Leckhampton Hill towards Gloucester in the far distance. Leckhampton Hill is an area of steep woodland stretching from the edge of Cheltenham to the top of the Cotswold escarpment.  In the foreground a couple and their young child sit in sunlight, talking to a drover and dog while his cattle wander on ahead. Trees frame the lower part of the painting on both sides with superb brushwork and detail. Beyond the figures the landscape stretches out for miles beneath a silvery sky. This is a lovely Old Master landscape oil painting.

Biography Thomas Barker (1769 -1847), (known as 'Barker of Bath,') was a British painter of landscape and rural life. There are six paintings by Barker in the Tate Gallery, including A Woodman and his Dog in a Storm (originally presented to the National Gallery in 1868) and several landscapes. The British Museum holds a number of Barker's drawings and prints. Three of Barker's paintings, Italian Landscape 1808, Landscape with a Waterfall and Landscape with Cattle are in Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
