| Description | This lovely Scottish Impressionist turn of the century landscape is by noted artist Alexander Brownlie Docharty. Painted circa 1900 it is a woodland landscape in Ayrshire painted up close so one feels immersed in the trees and foliage as they completely fill the canvas. The sliver birch trees in the background are much higher as growing on the top of an escarpment one can just see. The branches in the foreground reach across to frame the painting. The palette is of rich autumnal tones, with bands of greens in the foreground, reds central and the yellows and white of the silver birches beyond against a blue sky. The brushwork is fluid and the impression is slightly ephemeral an spiritual. It is worth taking the time to really look at this painting and read the different passages to fully appreciate its beauty. This is a superb example of Scottish Impressionism and of the artist's work in particular. Signed, also signed and inscribed with location verso. |

| Biography | Alexander Brownlie Docharty (1862-1940) was a landscape painter based at Kilkerran, Ayrshire. Like his uncle, the artist James Docharty, Alexander had started in calico design. He became a professional painter in 1882, after part-time classes at Glasgow School of Art. He later studied in Paris. Alexander Docharty’s paintings - of the Scottish Highlands and of Europe - are mainly in oil, although he also produced some good waterlcolours. |
