Description This sublime French Post Impressionist military portrait oil painting is by noted artist Honore Cavaroc. Painted in 1920 the sitter is a black reserve soldier from the 34th regiment. The contrasting vibrant palette is just superb and the ornate frame perfect. A really 'stop in your tracks' French 1920's portrait oil painting and an excellent example of Cavaroc's work.

Biography Honore Cavaroc (1846-1930) French painter, pastellist of portraits, landscapes, still-lifes and flowers. Cavaroc studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons in 1866, and also with Jean Seignemartin. His paintings were composed of juxtapositions of colours, which accentuated his back-lit subjects in delicate greys and purples. He painted his last works when he was more than 80, including The Gaiety of the Fields of Montmoyen (Cote d'Or) and Entry of the Park in Oullins (Rhone). Cavarocfirst exhibited at the salon in Lyons in 1872. He was a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris, taking part up to 1929 and winning a medal in 1886. He also received a third class medal at the Exposition Universalle in1889 and 1890.
