This strong 19th century Italian portrait oil painting is attributed to circle of Alessandro Capalti. Painted circa 1840 it is a bust length portrait of a young lady in a black dress with black ringlets cascading to her shoulders. She is wearing a striking lace collar with a cameo broach at her neck on red material. She is gazing away from the artist/viewer to her right. The detail in her face is superb. A fantastic 18th century portrait oil painting. |

Biography |
Alessandro Capalti (1810-1868). Capalti was a 19th century Italian painter born and active in Rome. He was a painter of historical paintings and portraits as well as decorative design. Capalti was a pupil of Tommatso Minardi. He exhibited at the Royal Academy london between 1851 and 1858. His most noted portraits are those of the Rolland family. Princess Gwendoline Borghese, the Duchess Massim and the actress Adelaide Ristori. He died in Rome in 1868. |
