The Hendersons - Online Exhibition

The Hendersons Exhibition.

Richard Taylor Fine Art are pleased to offer this stunning exhibition of Henderson paintings. The paintings included are by three related 19th century Scottish Impressionist artists; Joseph Henderson, father of John Henderson and Joseph Morris Henderson. All three Hendersons had enormous skill and sensitivity to their subject matter.

Joseph Henderson (1832-1908) was a Scottish painter of landscapes, genre, portraits and marinescapes. His genre was particularly painting working men such as shepherds, crofters, peddlers, cobblers, fishermen and farm labourers. However, he also painted Scottish country and coastal scenery. Joseph Henderson studied at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh and started to work as a portrait painter but having done so for about twenty years he discovered his true vocation which was marine painting. He mastered the painting of the sea in all its different conditions and light.
Joseph Henderson exhibited his work at the Royal Scottish Academy and at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from 1871 to 1886 and in Suffolk Street Galleries from 1882 to 1884. He was the President of the Glasgow Art Club, in which city he settled in 1852. Henderson married three times: in 1855, Helen Cosh; in 1869, Helen Young of Strathaven (died 1871); and in 1872, Eliza Thomson. Two of his sons John Henderson (1860-1924) and J. Morris Henderson also known as Joseph Morris Henderson RSA (1863-1936) also became painters in their own right. His daughter Marjory Henderson married the well-known Scottish painter William McTaggart, who painted in 1894 a wonderful portrait of Joseph Henderson which was presented by the family of Joseph Henderson in 1925 to the Glasgow Museums.

We currently have three paintings by Joseph Henderson:

Light is breaking through the clouds and the grey sea has areas bathed in beautiful silvery light as well as a few gulls wheeling in the wind. Two little children sit by some upturned boats amusing themselves whilst the women work. Seagulls wheel over head and boats are out on the aquamarine sea beneath a hazy sky. John Henderson (1860-1924) was the second oldest son of Joseph Henderson, his older brother James, also an artist, died aged 23. John was a landscape and portrait painter and later Director of Glasgow School of Art where he studied under his father. He first exhibited in 1884 at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and later in Rome, Venice Munich and other European art centres. After initially painting still life and portraits, John specialised in Scottish landscapes; mountains, woodland streams, lochs, panoramic views all skillfully capturing the interplay of light through trees and on water. The brothers shared a studio in Glasgow, the whole place packed with paintings, easels, old furniture and tea brewing on the stove. As John never married he lived with Joseph Morris and his family at Busby.

We now have just one painting by John Henderson:

Autumn in the Glen.
This lovely Scottish Impressionist oil painting dates to circa 1910 and is an oil on canvas in a stunning and fresh palette. The wooded moorland stream landscape is titled Autumn in the Glen and was possibly painted in Stirling as there are other examples of his work which date to this period. There is wonderful Impressionistic brushwork, especially in the water. A lovely autumnal painting and an excellent example of John Henderson's work.

Joseph Morris Henderson (1863-1936) youngest son of the artist Joseph Henderson by whom he was strongly influenced, studied at Glasgow University and Glasgow School of Art. He took the name Morris to distinguish himself from his father. His style absorbed much from romantic Victorian realism and he dedicated himself to landscapes, seascapes and coastal scenes often with pathways lined with wild flowers in the foreground. He exhibited throughout his life in Scotland and many continental cities frequently Munich and Berlin. He was elected an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928 and a full member in 1935.

We currently have three paintings by Joseph Morris Henderson:
