Female Artists - Online Exhibition
Why is Richard Taylor Fine Art having an online exhibition of female artists?
Here at Richard Taylor Fine Art we have artworks by almost 50 female artists amongst our collection. The contribution of female artists and the Female Gaze to our collection is something that we really value and want to highlight and share.
The Manchester Art Gallery had a year long exhibition in 2018 of Manchester born Victorian painter Annie Louisa Swynnerton's work, including two paintings on loan from Richard Taylor Fine Art. In the introduction to the catalogue, Alister Hudson, Director of the gallery said:
'Swynnerton is not alone amongst late 19th and early 20th century female artists to have fallen into obscurity. There are many factors to blame for this, including the dominance of male artists, administrators and historians in the art world and prejudices that deem women incapable of creative thought and vision equal to men'.
Whilst encouraged in genteel pursuits such as art and sewing, women were previously excluded from formal art training, art clubs and societies, some even unable to hold art teaching posts once married. Most eventually disappeared under a deluge of prejudice and family life.
However, some 19th century female artists such as Swynnerton and Susan Dacre fought on for equal rights in the art world and in 1922 Swynnerton was the first female associate member of the Royal academy of arts (ARA).
We have included here a selection of our favorite current paintings by female artists. I’m sure you will agree that they are more than equal to their male counterparts in both composition, execution and painterly skills.
