Description This stunning military portrait oil painting is by noted British portrait artist Henry Weigall, painted circa 1880. The sitter is the Honourable Edward Brownlow as inscribed verso. His military uniform of a black tunic and red sash needs more research for further details to emerge. The sitter was an officer. This handsome painting is framed as an oval in an ornate frame and the whole presentation suggests the sitter was of significance.

Frame Oval mounted in an ornate swept gilt almost square frame and in good condition, 40 inches by 38 inches.
Condition Good condition.
Biography Henry Weigall (1829-1925)was born to Henry Weigall Snr (1798-1882) and Selina Smith (c1801-1883) and died 1925. Henry, sometimes called "Henry Weigall Jnr.", was part of a very talented family. His father was a sculptor, gem engraver, die-sinker and modeller. Henry painted numerous portraits of well-known people, including Prime minister Disraeli, and created sculptures. In 1919, Henry, who had become a JP, and his wife donated to the Ramsgate Football Club the land occupied by Southwood Stadium. He lived in London in 1880 and Ramsgate Kent 1889. He married Rose Sophia Mary Fane (1834-1921) 15 August 1866 in Westminster Abbey, London.
