Title Trompe L'Oeil Cherub Angel
Description This mid 19th century Victorian oil painting is of a winged angel cherub pouring water from a ewer with a bas relief. It is in fact a Tromp L'oeil - a French phrase meaning 'to deceive the eye' and used to describe paintings that create the illusion of a real object or scene and often used in ceiling and wall murals.  In our case the illusion created is one of a bas relief sculptural technique with the cherub appearing to protude from the background. It is a really lovely work executed with tremendous skill and sensitivity.
