Artist Name Arthur John Strutt (1819-1888)
Title View of the Forum with Palazzo Dei Senatori, Rome
Description This stunning British Victorian architectural landscape oil painting is attributed to circle of well-travelled topographical artist Arthur John Strutt. Painted circa 1860, the location is the Forum in Rome, the columns seen on the left, and the centre of ancient daily life, gatherings, elections, trials and even gladitorIal combat.  In the background is the Palazzo dei Senatori, built between the mid-twelfth century and the last quarter of the thirteenth century on the ruins of the ancient Tabularium. Since 1144 it was the seat of the Municipality of Rome and its highest representative: the Senator, responsible for the administration of justice and city interests. in the foreground are various figures going about their daily life, including a priest, women with items on their heads, a man on horseback and a cart with two white oxen resting. The architectural detail is superb and the orangey-pink tones of brick work are lovely in the sunlight. An excellent 19th century Italian architectural landscape oil painting.

Note: See the watercolour by Vincenzo Marchi (1818-1894) at Christie's, London, 5 December 2013, lot 84 for a view of the Forum taken from a similar vantage point.
