Arturo Noci (1874-1953)

Artist Name Arturo Noci (1874-1953)
Title Art Deco Portrait of Woman in Green Dress
Description This beautiful 1930’s Art Deco portrait oil painting is by Italian New York artist Arturo Noci. It was painted in 1932 in New York where he lived from 1923 to his death in 1953 aged seventy nine. He became a much sought after Society portrait artist. His beautiful sitter is a mysterious lady in green. The composition is a seated three-quarter length portrait of a dark-haired young lady wearing a green dress with a darker green velvet shrug. She is profile but turning to look at the artist/viewer and smiling. She wears no jewelry but red lipstick. As she isn’t emphasising her status or wealth with jewelry or a lush interior as background, one wonders at the relationship with the artist. The background is dark besides the green edge of the curtain and makes her green clothing zing of the canvas. The painting of women in green often symbolizes growth, harmony and freshness as well as fertility, serenity and tranquility. Henri Matisse famously painted ‘Woman in Green’ in 1909 and this bold colour is a popular one for dresses in portraits. As well as the vibrant colour green, the palette used for her skin tones contains a range of colours that work perfectly. The brushwork is also superb. This is a stunning Art Deco portrait oil painting and an excellent example of Noci’s work in New York of that period.
