Basile de Loose (1809-1885)

Basile De Loose or Deloose ( 1809-1885) was a Belgian painter who specialised in domestic scenes, interiors and portraits. He started his artistic education under the tutorship of his father Jan-Jozef De Loose and continued his studies afterwards at the Antwerp Academy under Philippe van Bree. He resided in Paris in 1835 and also spent time in Germany where he exhibited his work which was well received. He finally returned to live and work in Brussels. Brussels, the Belgian capital, was the centre of artistic activity in the nineteenth century and Basile de Loose rented a studio there from 1837. His pleasant domestic scenes, softly lit and technically well executed, place him in the tradition of bourgeois Flemish art.
