Title Portrait of Caroline and her Puppets
Description This superb Royal Academy exhibited portrait oil painting is by British artist James Cleaver ARCA. It was painted in 1937 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1939 entitled 'Caroline and her Puppets'. It is a three quarter length portrait of a woman, Caroline, dangling a puppet or marionette in front of her. On a shelf behind her sit three more puppets and Caroline confidently gazes at the viewer/artist. There is lovely detail and colouring in her facial features and hair. Cleaver may have had some connection to the theatrical world as several of his paintings are behind the scenes at the theatre. This is a great example of his work and an exhibited piece.

Biography James Cleaver ARCA (1911-2003) was a London based artist and an Associate of the Royal College of Art. He painted in oils and watercolour including landscapes, portraits and figurative work. Several of his paintings were related to the theatre, often behinds the scenes such as the sewing room at the Old Vic. He exhibited at the Royal Academy.
