Alfred Edward Borthwick (1871-1955)
Alfred Edward Borthwick RSA, PRSW, ARB, ARE(1871-1955). Born in Scarborough, Borthwick was a painter in oils and watercolour ; portraits, landscapes and religious studies. He also occasionally did stain glass window design. He trained at Edinburgh College of Art, in London and the Academie Julian in Paris. He settled in Edinburgh. Borthwick served in both the Boer War and WW1. He employed a free, wet and typical Scottish technique, in the manner of the Hague school. Elected ARE 1909, RSW 1911, ARBA 1927, RSA 1938, President of the RSW 1932-51. Exhibited RA 7, RSA 88, GI 33, RSW 93, RI 1, AAS 12, L 8. Borthwick is represented in many Scottish galleries including the Edinburgh City collection.
