Description A  large Scottish Victorian genre portrait oil painting of a shepherdess. This stunning painting by listed Scottish artist Edwin Sherwood Calvert RSA was painted circa 1890. Taking its inspiration from Jean Franciois Millet and the French realists this very large and imposing painting depicts the pretty young girl full length and filling the canvas with the sheep and the landscape by her side. A stunning realist genre depiction of country life. The painting is housed in its original Barbizon frame.

Biography Edwin Sherwood Calvert (1844-1898). Calvert worked in Glasgow and North France where he created realistic coast and seascapes and then landscapes in the style of Corot in the beginning of his career. He exhibited his works in the British Royal Academy (1878-1896), in the New Gallery, in the Suffolk Street Galleries, New Water Colour Society and at the Paris Salon (soc.des Art.franc. , 1896). He exhibited Birmingham 3, Glasgow Institute 31, Liverpool 17, Royal Academy 14, Royal Scottish academy 17, Royal Watercolour Society 36.
