|Description||This large striking Art Deco portrait is by noted Scottish female artist Euphans Hilary Strain. Strain was known for her portraits and marine oil paintings. Painted circa 1930 the painting is a self portrait of the artist in bold blue tones with strong brushwork. She is seated and holding a bronze statue on her lap as if showing it to the viewer and gazing upwards. A really lovely portrait.

|Biography||Euphans Hilary Strain (1884-1960) (Mrs Harold Wyllie) Strain was born in Alloway, Ayrshire. She was a painter of portraits and marines. Strain was educated in Germany and trained at the Glasgow School of Art, winning the Director's prize in 1922 followed by a diploma in 1923. She married Harold Wyllie who was a marine artist. Strain lived for many years in Glasgow and Dunkeld before finally returning to Ayrshire. She exhiited at the Royal Academy 1, Royal Scottish Academy 9, Paris salon, Glasgow 24, Liverpool 3, Royal Cambrian Academy 1.|
