| Description | Scottish artist George Houston RSA painted this stunning Scottish landscape. Painted circa 1920 the location is the Scottish island of Iona and the golf course there. I use the term golf course loosely as it is in fact a magnificent stretch of machair (short grass on sand kept manicured by grazing rabbits and sheep) and apparently the sometimes flags are the only thing that gives it away! The view is one of the finest beach views anywhere with the Camus Cuil an Tabibh forming the backdrop. To the non golfers eye, this looks like a superb coastal landscape with the lovely stone wall in the foreground, the sweep of the coastline and fantastic blue and green tones with a couple of figures in the middle ground. However, to the golfers eye, no doubt the figures are playing a round of golf! The previous owner, David Easby, was a collector of golfing artefacts but this painting is so stunning it can be appreciated by golfers and non golfers alike. Signed lower left. |

| Biography | George Houston RSA (1869-1957) was born at West Lynn, Dalry, Ayrshire. He lived most of his life around Ayrshire, Edinburgh and Argyll, although he was widely travelled for his time, visiting Japan in 1911. He is best known for his consistently high technical skill, capturing the atmosphere and changing climate and seasons of his favourite Argyll and Ayrshire. He painted mainly in oil and watercolour but also produced etchings. Member of The London Society of 25. Elected Associate Royal Scottish academy 1900. RSW 1908, Royal Institute 1920 and Royal Scottish Academy 1925. Exhibited in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Europe and the USA. Represented in Glasgow Art Gallery (9) and other Scottish galleries.
