| Description | This stunning religious 19th century oil painting is by Belgian artist Charles Soubre. Painted and dated 1867 the painting is of the crucifixion of Christ on Calvary. The beautifully painted pale glowing body of Christ on the cross is totally alone. There is a stunning other worldly John Martinesque landscape with a dramatic atmospheric sky line behind him as dusk approaches which is perhaps a symbolic reference to the event itself. A skull - momento mori lies by Christ. A memento mori is an artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. The expression 'memento mori' developed with the growth of Christianity, which emphasized Heaven, Hell, and salvation of the soul in the afterlife. This is a superb example of Soubre's work and references earlier Crucifixions by Anthony van Dyck and Sir Peter Paul Rubens. One of my favourite paintings - it's just brilliant. |

| Biography | Charles Soubre (1821 -1895) was born and died in Liege, Belgium. He was a painter of historical scenes, genre scenes, figures, portraits and landscapes. Soubre was a pupil of J. Barthelemy Viellevoye at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Liege. He was also an architect by profession. From 1893-1895 he exhibited at the Cercle des Beaux-Arts in Liege. |
