Description This lovely Art Deco period portrait oil painting is attributed to noted Scottish artist Robert Hope. There is fantastic heavy, confident fluid brushwork and impasto. The limited palette belies the tones and depths of colour within it and suggests influences of Whistler.  Painted circa 1920 and previously owned by Mrs Holland, the sitter is as yet unknown.
Provenance Scottish estate. Previously owned by Mrs V B Holland.

Biography Robert Hope (1869-1936) ARSA 1911, RSA 1925. Born Edinburgh, he studied at the Edinburgh School of Design, the RSA schools and Academie Julian Paris. He started as a Lithographic draughtsman but soon turned to painting. His work included portraits, landscapes and views of Edinburgh in oil. Associated with the East Linton group of painters and most of his landscapes are of East Linton.
