Description This dramatic large 19th century Scottish landscape is by famous Scottish Glasgow Boy artist John Reid Murray. Painted in 1890 the location is thought to be in France and Murray exhibited extensively in Europe with the other Glasgow Boys before his life was tragically cut short. This superb sunset landscape has Murray's typical low horizon and seasonal colour as the close up photo shows. The reflections of the evening light on the water are amazing.
Signed and dated 1890 lower right.

Biography John Reid Murray  (1861-1906) Born in Helensburgh; died Prestwick. Studied at Glasgow before going to Antwerp Academy with E A Hornel. Exhibited with The Glasgow Boys in Europe. A landscape painter his work is distinguished by the frequent use of heavy impasto with a fine feel for seasonal colour often with extensive foregrounding and low horizon. He gained a gold medal in Munich in 1897 and died before his full potential was realised. He is represented in The Glasgow Art Gallery. Exhibited Royal Scottish Academy  45, Royal Academy 1, Royal Hibernian Society 7, Glasgow Institute 50, Liverpool 2.
