Walter Brettingham (1924-2004)

Artist Name Walter Brettingham (1924-2004)
Title Performers on Stage
Description This super British 1950's Post Impressionist theatrical figurative oil painting is by Royal Academy trained artist Walter Brettingham. Painted in 1953, the subject matter is very interesting and the colours are incredibly vibrant - yellow theatre walls, orange brick work, blue curtains and green floor with the mysterious spiral stairs in the shadows. The post Impressionist brushwork is also superb. The composition is a stage from the wings, behind the scenes before a performance. A couple of men in boaters and blue jackets are on stage, one tying his shoe, hat and cane on the floor while a man adjusts a light.  A lady in a bikini stands chatting to a man in tails off stage. In the foreground is a spiral staircase and a man sits on the steps, the profile of his face illuminated as he watches the is a very intriguing Post Impressionist 1950's oil painting and an excellent example of Brettingham's work. There is another painting on the reverse.
