Description This stunning French Old Master oil painting is attributed to the circle of Claude Joseph Vernet. Painted circa 1760 it is a fine Capriccio view of an estuary with figures by the entrance of a grotto. The buildings and trees across the estuary are beautifully reflected in the still water. A lovely example of an 18th century French Old Master marine old painting.

Biography Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789) was the leading French landscape painter (with Hubert Robert) of the later 18th century. He achieved great celebrity with his topographical paintings and serene landscapes. He was also one of the century's most accomplished painters of tempests and moonlight scenes.
