Title the Birth of Summer
Description This stunning British figurative oil/tempera painting is by noted female artist Noel Laura Nisbet. Whilst studying at the Royal College of Art she was the winner of the Princess of Wales’ Scholarship, established in 1863 to reward the most distinguished female art student in the United Kingdom. The painting is entitled The Birth of Summer and painted in 1941, so during WW2.  This vibrant and energetic painting depicts a group of women in an orchard,  delivering a baby to a young woman. Immediately over head a stork holds infants from its beak and on its back whilst more infants perch on a tangle of rooftop nests. The grass is bedecked with golden dandelions and the women are all in colourful rustic clothing. The significance of the date, 1941, and the symbolism in this painting cannot be understated. Instead of bombs, babies are dropping from the sky and being delivered by a harmless low flying stork. The Birth of Summer is an excellent example of Nisbet's work and a wonderful counterpoint to the blitz with a British Modernistic nod to the religious Madonna and Child paintings of the Italian Renaissance .
