Description | This superb realist portrait oil painting is by British Victorian exhibited artist Henry Gibbs. It was painted circa 1900 and is a seated portrait painting of an elderly woman reading. We know that the sitter was a resident of Handcross village, near Crawley in Sussex where the artist also lived. The painting was later given to the Woodhouse family. There is considerable artistry in the details of the sitter's face and hands as she contemplates her reading. A magnificent painting by a much exhibited British Victorian artist. |
Provenance | Lawrences Crewkerne, April 12th 1984, lot 316, with a typed note from Leanora Woodhouse, dated 9/1/84, stating that the picture was a gift to the Woodhouse family from the artist and that the lady depicted was a resident in the same village as the artist, Handcross, near Crawley in Sussex. |
