Description This beautiful British exhibited portrait oil painting is by noted female artist Alice Mary Burton. Painted circa 1935, the sitter is noted verso to be Mrs Willis. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and bears the label verso. The painting is a half length portrait of Mrs Willis wearing a black dress with a gorgeous embroidered white shawl and pearl necklace. She is gazing at the artist/viewer in a friendly manner and has a sophisticated dignified air about her. The details, brushwork and  and sympathetic rendering of the painting are lovely. The painting is housed in an ornate frame. A superb example of a female artist in her prime and of a 1930's exhibited work, housed in its original frame.

Biography Alice Mary Burton (1893-1968) was born on September 21st 1893 in Nogent-sur-Oise in France.  She studied art at the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art and at the Regent Street Polytechnic School (Bronze and Silver Medals).  She was a portrait and figure painter, although she did produce a few landscapes.  She was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1932. She lived in North Wales (1913), Royal Tunbridge Wells and London (1921).
Exhibited: Cooling Galleries 8, Glasgow Institutue 1, Walker Gallery Liverpool 2, Royal Academy 8, Royal Institute 12, Royal Society of British Artists 52 and Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
