Artist Name Willem Leendert Bruckman (1866-1940)
Title The University Church of St Mary Oxford
Description This beautiful exhibited watercolour painting is by Dutch listed artist Willem Leendert Bruckman.  It depicts the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford, South Porch. The University Church of St Mary the Virgin (St Mary's or SMV for short) is an Oxford church situated on the north side of the High Street. It is the centre from which the University of Oxford grew and its parish consists almost exclusively of university and college buildings. St Mary's possesses an eccentric Baroque porch, designed by Nicholas Stone, facing High Street, and a spire which is claimed by some church historians to be one of the most beautiful in England. It was exhibited as number 32 in March 1926 so presumably it was also painted that year. The composition is a view from The High Street, opposite the south porch of the church, so close up that only this section of the church can be seen. A person is passing the railings entrance and another figure coming out of the church doors. They help to gvie perspective to the enormous Baroque arched entrance with sculptures above and stained glass windows either side. A plant is growing up and over the right hand side. The muted palette is in keeping with the architecture and the play of shadow and light just lovely. This is a beautiful watercolour painting from the 1920's of The University Church of St Mary's, Oxford and a fine example of Bruckman's work.  It is housed in its original gilded oak frame and in good condition.
