Description A original mid 20th century landscape oil on panel by Scottish artist Alan Ian Ronald RSW. He is a well listed Scottish artist who exhibited in galleries and major Scottish and British art institutions. He was noted for his landscapes in Germany and Scotland.This expressionist original oil painting "The Alster Hamburg" in Germany was painted in1935. It was exhibited by the Art Cellar Edinburgh and the Atkinson Art Gallery Southport  and retains the label verso. What also makes this of such interest is that the Scottish Colourist influences are being merged by the German Expressionist impasto which must have been accessible to Ronald. It is exceptionally well painted. The painting depicts Hamburg in 1935 at an important time in its history. The town and the river with boats are superbly captured.

Biography Alan Ian Ronald (1899-1967) - born in Edinburgh 6 June, died Dunferline. Painter in oil and watercolour; harbours, quaysides, and country scenes. Trained Edinburgh School of Art. Worked on the East coast in Scotland and in Germany in a powerful effective style. Lived for a time in Edinburgh before settling in Charlestown Fife. Elected RWS in 1935.
