The half length portrait depicts a boy wearing a red scarf around his dark curls and a shawl slipped from his shoulders. A truly captivating and romantic painting with striking bold use of colour. Etienne Billet was noted for his Orientalist paintings and this was painted circa 1870. Signed upper right. |

Biography |
Etienne Billet (1821 - 1888) French painter born in the city of Marseille. Training in Marseille at the studio of Aubert and pupil in 1842 of Drolling and Léon Cogniet in Paris. Painter of portraits, landscapes in the Realist, Romantic and Orientalist style. At the end of the 1850's he made several trips to Algeria and staying a few years in Egypt. Works in museums: Marseille and Salenstein. |
